The reasons of our commitment to citizens

"Notre Europe's very name, which I chose at the think tank's creation in 1996, embodies a search for simplicity. Everything is in it, because this Europe born after the Second World War, this Europe of peace, is indeed 'ours', whether we be politicians, activists or just citizens."

Jacques Delors, L’Europe tragique et Magnifique, Saint Simon, 2006

As a European think tank, our mission is to address analyses and recommendations to EU decision-makers and experts. But our commitment to citizens has also been present from the start. The "no" to the Constitutional Treaty from two founding peoples in the European project (French and Dutch) and the constant erosion of turnout at European elections have made us redouble our efforts to reach all those who are not directly involved (as students or professionals) in European integration. We devote a part of our time to explaining – outside of election periods – the meaning of the European project, a project which was intended not to oppose Europe's peoples but rather to serve them.

Europe Forum

Two years after the French and Dutch "no" verdicts on the Constitutional Treaty, the first Europe Forum took place in Lille in 2007. It aimed to:

  • Inject new dynamism into European and French civil society, taking inspiration from the spirit and the optimism of the EU's founding fathers;
  • Become the main event on the agenda of European civil society;
  • Be a giant agora, a marketplace of ideas, dialogue and propositions for different generations of citizens, and a hundred of political and economic decision-makers, intellectuals, unionists, researchers, both European and national.

Notre Europe organised the first three Europe Forums in cooperation with two other associations: EuropaNova and the European Movement in France and a hundred of partners (associations, unions, medias, youth movements, universities, think tanks, local, national and European institutions).

Over a single day, the Europe Forum includes two types of activities. First, two plenary meetings and about 15 workshops organised by partners with the aim of ensuring lively, pluralistic debate. And second, entertainment activities such as a literary café, an associative village, a simulation of a parliamentary debate co-organised with the European Youth Parliament, games for children, etc.

This document is addressed to European and national decision-makers and presents a summary of these debates’ key propositions in which more than 2000 citizens, a hundred of political actors, unions and associations representatives, intellectuals and cultural actors were involved.
