Notre Europe's viewpoint | 24/07/2008

It was with profound sadness that we learned of the accidental death of Bronisław Geremek, the courageous freedom activist in his country and great advocate of EU enlargement to central Europe. We will not only miss this distinguished historian of Europe's poor and marginal groups; also, and above all, we will miss the passionate figure in the European project, the MEP and president of the Fondation Jean Monnet pour l'Europe.

With his characteristic enthusiasm and availability, Bronisław Geremek had accepted the invitation to the second European Estates General, held in Lyon in June. He took part in the plenary session and several workshops.

The thoughts he shared were not only retrospective analyses. They also had great contemporary value, already expressed in the very recent interview he gave us for our project European Works. Today we publish this interview as a homage to Bronisław Geremek and a testimony that we would like to share with our readers.

"It is far easier to integrate economies and administrations than to unite memories. The new Member States have a different view of the past"
