Agenda

13th February, 11h-15-30h Notre Europe organises an experts' roundtable discussion on the renewed EU social agenda.

Presented in July 2008, the so-called "Renewed Social Agenda for the 21st century Europe" has been defined by the Commission as the proof of "a new commitment to Social Europe". Yet, the new social package received a number of critiques at the moment of it presentation. Is this social agenda a decisive step forward, as the Commission argues, or rather a small and cautious step, as others claim? Is the new social agenda's broad approach - the fact that it does not confine to the traditional domains of employment and social protection- a way to ensure a more comprehensive EU response to citizens' social problems, or will it on the contrary endanger the coherence of EU action in the social field? And last but not least, in the prospect of a deep recession in Europe, is the renewed social agenda the right way ahead to maintain and renew the EU commitment to Social Europe?

The round table will gather together a reduced group of experts to discuss about these and other questions related with the rationale, scope and content of the new EU social agenda. The results of the discussions will be object of a publication.
